Discussability
It is also important that the code is and remains a topic of discussion. Where there is a taboo about talking about the code, a culture of different and even conflicting interpretations of the content of the code may quickly develop. Staff then may also feel unable to share their dilemmas and consequently perceive a lack of support in bringing the code alive. Because a code can never be totally complete and always requires translation to practice, it is important that managers and employees are able to discuss it with each other. The sixth condition, discussability, reduces the chance of misinterpretation and broadens support from within the organisation for the decisions managers and employees take.
Additionally it is important that, when violations of the code are identified, offenders can and are indeed challenged. If this does not happen, a hush-hush policy quickly develops itself with the potential of growing into a serious problem for the organisation. Social control is an important condition for keeping a code alive.
For each organisation with a code there are questions such as: To what extent are dilemmas that are related to the code discussable? Can employees challenge each other and their manager on alleged violations of the code? Is criticism heeded? Or does the whistle-blower get the proverbial axe? And does everyone scratch each other's back?
